You gain experience for almost everything you do. The experience you gain helps you level up and unlock new things on you Home island.
Complete the characters quests to gain the most experience. To gather or make a Goods, only gives you little experience.
When you level up, you fill up your Energy. But if you have maxed your Energy you do not get any, except for the bonus.
